We Own the Night is a crime drama film directed and written by James Gray. The movie follows Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix), a nightclub manager in New York City in the 1980s. Bobby is estranged from his family who are all involved in law enforcement, his brother Joseph (Mark Wahlberg) is a cop, and his father, Bert (Robert Duvall), is a police chief.

Bobby works at a popular nightclub owned by Russian mafia boss, Vadim Nezhinski (Alex Veadov) and has distanced himself from his family due to his illegal connections. One night, Joseph and his partner are ambushed by Russian hitmen, and Joseph is left hospitalized with severe injuries. Bobby is forced to reconcile with his family and help them track down and bring the men responsible to justice.

As Bobby and Joseph work together to investigate the Russian mafia's involvement, they encounter resistance from their superiors who are unwilling to take down the influential gang. Bert, the patriarch of the family, is torn between his loyalty to the police department and his son's safety, as the Russian mafia continues to threaten their lives.

The movie also explores Bobby's internal struggle to reconcile his loyalty to his criminal acquaintances with his familial loyalty and desire for justice. As the tension between the police and the Russian mafia escalate, Bobby must choose where his allegiances lie to protect his loved ones.
