We Only Know So Much is a drama film that explores the intricacies and complexities of family dynamics. It follows the life of Jean Copeland, a married woman who finds herself in a passionate affair with a suicidal lover, a painter named Walt. Jean battles with guilt and shame as she tries to balance her love for Walt and her devotion to her husband, Henry.
Meanwhile, Jean is also busy caring for Henry's sick relatives, including his mother, sister, and niece. The family drama unfolds as tensions rise, and secrets are revealed. Henry's sister, Vivian, is an alcoholic struggling to find her place in the family. His mother, Ada, is a controlling matriarch who refuses to acknowledge her failing health. His niece, Lily, is a troubled teenager who gets into trouble with drugs.
As Jean navigates her double life, she realizes that she can't keep up the facade forever. With her husband's family falling apart and Walt's mental health deteriorating, Jean is forced to make a difficult decision that will change her life forever.
The film is directed by Donal Lardner Ward, and stars Jeanne Tripplehorn as Jean Copeland, Damian Young as Henry Copeland, Loudon Wainwright III as Walt, and Virginia Robinson as Ada Copeland. It is based on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Crane.
