We Are the Night is a German supernatural horror film directed by Dennis Gansel, starring Karoline Herfurth, Nina Hoss, Jennifer Ulrich, and Anna Fischer. The film revolves around Lena, an 18 year old woman who is bitten by a vampire named Louise and transformed into a vampire herself.
Under the tutelage and guidance of Louise and her fellow vampires, Charlotte and Nora, Lena learns to navigate her new life as a vampire. She revels in the newfound freedom that her powers give her, enjoying the luxurious lifestyle that her companions have grown accustomed to over the centuries. But her indulgent lifestyle comes with a price as she slowly realizes the dark side of being a vampire. Lena is gradually consumed by the bloodlust and violent tendencies of her new family, leading her to question whether the price of immortality is worth paying.
Things come to a head when Lena falls in love with Tom, a young undercover cop who is investigating a series of murders that are linked to the vampires. Lena becomes increasingly torn between her loyalty to Louise and her growing feelings for Tom.
We Are the Night is a stylish, visually arresting horror film that is steeped in Gothic imagery. The film explores themes of love, mortality, and the corrupting influence of power. Despite its horror elements, the film is also very much a love story at its heart.
