Waterboys

Comedy  Japan

Waterboys is a 2001 Japanese sports comedy film directed by Shinobu Yaguchi. The film follows five high school boys who are all members of the school's swim team. However, due to their lack of swimming skills, they are often mocked by the school's more athletic students.

One day, a new female coach named Sakuma arrives at the school and starts a synchronized swimming team to compete in the upcoming competition. The boys, who are initially hesitant to participate in the seemingly girly sport, are eventually convinced by Sakuma to join the team after witnessing her skills in the pool.

Although they struggle with the coordination and grace required for synchronized swimming, the boys slowly begin to improve as they train together. They also face off against the school's football and baseball players, who constantly make fun of them for their new sport, but gradually earn their respect through their determination and hard work.

Throughout the film, the boys also navigate their personal relationships and struggles, including one member dealing with his parents' divorce and another struggling to communicate with his crush.

In the end, the boys give a successful performance at the competition, impressing both the judges and their peers with their newfound synchronized swimming skills. The film concludes with a heartfelt tribute to their coach, Sakuma, who helped them discover their own strengths and challenged them to break through societal stereotypes.
