Watchmen is a 2009 superhero film directed by Zack Snyder and based on the 1986-87 comic book limited series of the same name by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons. The film takes place in an alternate 1985 where Richard Nixon is in his fifth term as President of the United States, the Soviet Union is still a global superpower and masked vigilantes have been outlawed by the government.
The film revolves around a group of former costumed heroes who are being targeted by a mysterious assailant. The group includes Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), a ruthless masked vigilante who investigates the murder of one of his former colleagues, The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan); Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson), a wealthy ex-superhero who uses gadgets and technology to fight crime; Silk Spectre II (Malin Ã…kerman), daughter of former hero Silk Spectre (Carla Gugino) who brings a feminine side to the group; Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), a retired superhero turned successful businessman; and Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), a godlike being with the power to manipulate matter at will.
As the group investigates the murder of The Comedian, they uncover a plot by Ozymandias to save the world from nuclear war by creating a fake alien invasion. However, Rorschach opposes this plan and decides to expose it to the world, leading to a climactic confrontation. In the end, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias leave Earth, while Rorschach is killed by the government. The film ends with Silk Spectre II and Nite Owl II deciding to continue their relationship and carry on the legacy of the Watchmen.
