War and Peace is a 1966 Soviet film directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, and is considered one of the greatest movies ever made. The film is an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel of the same name and tells a complex story of several aristocratic families, as well as common soldiers and peasants, during the invasion of Napoleon's army in 1812.
The film is divided into four parts, and has a running time of approximately seven hours. The first part of the film introduces the characters and their relationships, especially between the Rostov family and Pierre Bezukhov. Natasha Rostova, the youngest daughter of the Rostov family, falls in love with Andrei, but eventually marries Prince Anatole Kuragin in a scandalous affair. Meanwhile, Pierre Bezukhov, a wealthy and intelligent man, struggles with his unhappy marriage to Helene and ultimately falls in love with Natasha.
In the second part of the film, the story focuses on the preparations for the war against Napoleon's army. The Russian army under Marshal Kutuzov is facing an uphill battle against Napoleon's experienced soldiers. The third part of the film follows the battles themselves, including the famous Battle of Borodino, which lasted for over a day and claimed thousands of lives.
Finally, in the fourth and final part of the film, the war comes to an end with the decisive victory of the Russian army. The main characters also experience their own victories and losses, leading to a conclusion that reflects the themes of the novel - the fragility of life, the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit.
War and Peace is renowned for its epic scale and elaborate battle scenes, with over 120,000 extras used in the filming of the Borodino battle. The film received an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968.
