Wadjda lives with her mother, who works in a hospital and is often too busy to spend time with her daughter. Wadjda's father is absent, as he has taken a second wife and rarely visits his first family. Wadjda attends a strict all-girls school, where the students are taught to cover themselves from head to toe and are discouraged from pursuing any interests outside of homemaking and religious studies. Despite this, Wadjda is determined to have a sense of independence and freedom.
To raise money for the bicycle, Wadjda starts selling homemade bracelets and mixes at school. She also starts participating in a Quran recitation competition, hoping to win the prize money. Meanwhile, Wadjda's mother is preoccupied with her husband's demands that she bear him a son, and Wadjda's rebellious behavior causes her additional stress.
Despite the obstacles she faces, Wadjda persists in her efforts to secure the bicycle. She befriends a delivery driver, who takes her to the bicycle shop and helps her negotiate the price. Wadjda's mother eventually discovers her daughter's plan and, realizing how important the bicycle is to Wadjda, decides to buy it for her.
The film ends on a hopeful note, with Wadjda joyfully riding her bicycle through the streets of Riyadh with her friend Abdullah. The story underscores the challenges faced by girls and women in Saudi Arabia, but also celebrates their resilience and determination to assert their identities in a patriarchal society.
