As the earthquake occurs, an explosion rocks the station, filling it with smoke and causing a train to crash. Mike Roark and his team rush to the scene to realized that the underground explosion is caused by a rare phenomena- the rise of magma from deep beneath the Earth's surface.

As the lava flows through the city, it sets buildings on fire, causes massive destruction to streets and landmarks, and threatens to engulf the entire city. Roark and Barnes work together to help evacuate the city while also trying to come up with a plan to stop the volcano from consuming Los Angeles.

Despite encountering numerous obstacles including a lack of resources, logistical issues, and the sheer magnitude of the disaster, Roark and Barnes eventually devise a plan to divert the lava flow, saving the city.
