Scandalous Connections: Virginia and Vita's Forbidden Love

Drama,Romance  Ireland,United Kingdom

Vita & Virginia is a British biographical romance film, directed by Chanya Button and written by Button and Eileen Atkins. The movie is based on the real-life love affair of novelist Virginia Woolf and socialite Vita Sackville-West that took place in the 1920s. The film stars Gemma Arterton as Vita Sackville-West and Elizabeth Debicki as Virginia Woolf.

The movie explores the intense and complex relationship between the two women, who came from very different backgrounds but were united by their love of literature and intellectual curiosity. Vita was a wealthy, domineering, and charismatic aristocrat who was known for her affairs with both men and women. Virginia was a brilliant writer who struggled with mental illness and bouts of depression.

The film takes place against the backdrop of London's literary and artistic scene in the 1920s, including the Bloomsbury Group and the Charleston Farmhouse. The movie shows how Vita and Virginia's unconventional romance inspired Woolf's novel Orlando, which was published in 1928 and tells the story of a gender-shifting protagonist who lives for centuries.

Vita & Virginia premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018 and was released in the UK and US in 2019. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but Arterton and Debicki's performances were praised for their intensity and chemistry. The movie was also noted for its feminist themes and depiction of a historically overlooked lesbian relationship.
