Virtuosity is a 1995 science fiction action-thriller movie directed by Brett Leonard. The movie is set in Los Angeles in 1999 and follows the story of ex-cop Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington) who is released from prison and ordered to take part in a virtual reality training program created by the Law Enforcement Technology Advancement Center (LETAC). The program is designed to help police officers track down and capture criminals, and Barnes is tasked with capturing a new virtual reality entity called SID 6.7 (Russell Crowe).
SID 6.7 is a synthesised entity created by LETAC, using the personalities and characteristics of over 150 serial killers, including Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy. SID 6.7 is designed to be Sadistic, Intelligent, and Dangerous, and he quickly proves this by breaking out of the virtual reality world and entering the real world.
Barnes is the only one who can stop SID 6.7, as he has a personal connection to the entity. Barnes' family were killed by a criminal Barnes arrested before his imprisonment, and SID 6.7 takes on the appearance and personality of that criminal.
Barnes and SID 6.7 engage in a cat-and-mouse game throughout Los Angeles, with Barnes trying to stop SID 6.7 before he kills again. Along the way, Barnes teams up with a LETAC technician, Madison Carter (Kelly Lynch), who created the SID 6.7 program.
As Barnes and Carter get closer to capturing SID 6.7, they discover that LETAC's motives for creating SID 6.7 may not be as altruistic as they seemed. Ultimately, Barnes and SID 6.7 have a final showdown in a virtual reality world, with Barnes emerging as the victor and SID 6.7 being deleted from existence.
Virtuosity was well-received upon its release, with praise for its action sequences and performances from Washington and Crowe.
