In the 1960 adaptation of John Wyndham's novel "The Midwich Cuckoos," Village of the Damned tells the story of a small village in California that is suddenly and inexplicably plunged into a deep sleep that lasts for hours. When the citizens of Midwich wake up, they soon discover that all the women of the village have become pregnant, regardless of whether or not they were previously pregnant or had any sexual contact.
Nine months later, the children are born, and they all possess strange, glowing eyes and an unsettling power over anyone who crosses their path. As the kids grow older, many of the adults in the village begin to fear and distrust them, believing that they pose a threat to their community and their way of life.
As the children's telepathic abilities become more and more pronounced, they use their powers to control the minds of those around them, leading to a series of horrific events and tragedies. The safety and survival of Midwich and its citizens ultimately depend on whether or not they can find a way to prevent the children from using their supernatural powers to take control of the village.
The film, directed by Wolf Rilla, features a talented cast, including George Sanders, Barbara Shelley, and Martin Stephens, and has since become a classic of the horror genre. It was so successful, in fact, that it even spawned a sequel, 1964's Children of the Damned, as well as a 1995 remake starring Christopher Reeve.
