Sylvia Pickel (played by Cyndi Lauper) and Nick Deezy (played by Jeff Goldblum) are both brought to a psychic research facility in New York City where they participate in a study on psychic abilities. During the study, Sylvia and Nick discover that they have a unique psychic connection and are able to communicate telepathically.
Not long after, they are approached by Harry Buscafusco (played by Peter Falk) who offers them $50,000 to help him find his missing son Tony (played by Googy Gress) who went missing in South America while searching for a lost city of gold. Despite their initial hesitation, Sylvia and Nick agree to take on the job and travel to Ecuador.
Once in Ecuador, they realize they are in over their heads and are met with numerous obstacles including dangerous terrain, hostile locals, and a criminal organization known as The Chasquis, who are also searching for the lost city of gold. Along the way, Sylvia and Nick encounter a number of strange and surreal experiences, including a group of llamas that can predict the future.
As they get closer to the lost city of gold, Sylvia and Nick discover an ancient mystical secret and must use their psychic abilities to navigate their way through a series of booby-trapped tunnels to find Tony. In the end, they not only find Tony but also unearth the lost city of gold and a new level of understanding of their own psychic powers, as well as their growing affection for each other.
