Venus in Fur

Drama  France,Poland

Venus in Fur is a 2013 drama film directed by Roman Polanski and based on the play of the same name by David Ives. The film follows an actress named Vanda, who shows up unannounced to audition for a part in a play being directed by Thomas. Thomas is initially dismissive of Vanda, but he is forced to take notice of her when she begins to exhibit uncanny knowledge of the play and a seductive personality that parallels that of the character she is auditioning for.

As the audition progresses, Vanda's personality becomes increasingly erratic and it becomes unclear whether she is simply an ambitious actress, or if she has a hidden agenda. Thomas becomes increasingly drawn to her, both as a performer and as a woman, leading to a blur between reality and fiction.

Throughout the film, themes of power, gender roles, and dominance are explored, with Vanda challenging Thomas' initial assumptions about her and turning the tables on his misogynistic views. The film builds to a provocative and unexpected conclusion, leaving the audience questioning what was real and what was acted, and who ultimately held the power in the relationship between Thomas and Vanda.

Venus in Fur was well-received by critics, particularly for actress Emmanuelle Seigner's performance as Vanda, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
