Varg Veum is a private investigator in Bergen, Norway. His life takes an unexpected turn when he finds out that his girlfriend Karin is pregnant. Meanwhile, he receives a request to locate a missing pair of siblings who were last seen in the city's prostitution circles.
Varg begins his investigation by visiting several seedy bars and brothels, and encounters various unsavory characters who are unwilling to talk. However, he eventually finds a lead that takes him to a high-end escort agency in the city center.
There, Varg discovers that the missing siblings worked as prostitutes for the agency, and had some connection to its owner, a powerful businessman named Arve Stavik. Varg also learns that Karin's life is in danger, as Stavik's henchmen have been keeping tabs on her since they found out about her relationship with Varg.
As Varg delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of corruption and deceit involving several prominent figures in Bergen's business and political circles. He realizes that exposing the truth could put himself and Karin in grave danger, and faces a difficult decision.
In the end, Varg chooses to risk his own safety and turns over the evidence to the authorities, leading to several arrests and the downfall of Stavik's empire.
