David Aames, played by Tom Cruise, is a young and successful publishing magnate in New York City. He is popular and enjoys a luxurious lifestyle, which includes a string of casual relationships with beautiful women. One night, at a party hosted by his friend Brian Shelby (Jason Lee), David meets a woman named Sofia (Penélope Cruz), and the two quickly hit it off.
The next morning, David wakes up in Sofia's apartment and agrees to give her a ride home. However, he accidentally crashes his car while driving and is left severely disfigured with a grotesque face. His world is turned upside down as he struggles to come to grips with his new appearance, which includes wearing a mask in public.
David's mental state deteriorates as he becomes increasingly confused about his surroundings, unable to differentiate between dreams and reality. He begins experiencing strange and surreal occurrences, including being cryogenically frozen as part of a new experimental technology that promises to extend life indefinitely.
As David's grip on reality starts to slip, he seeks answers from a psychologist named McCabe (Kurt Russell), who is studying his case. However, even McCabe is unable to help David, and he is ultimately forced to confront his inner demons and come to terms with the truth about his existence.
The movie Vanilla Sky, directed by Cameron Crowe, is a psychological thriller that explores themes of identity, perception, and the nature of reality. It is a remake of the 1997 Spanish film, Abre los Ojos (Open Your Eyes), also directed by Alejandro Amenábar.
