Valkyrie is a historical thriller film released in 2008, directed by Bryan Singer. The film is based on the true story of the July 20 plot in 1944, a failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler by German officers who were part of the German resistance movement.
Tom Cruise stars as Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, a high-ranking army officer who becomes disillusioned with Hitler's leadership and direction for Germany. After being severely injured in North Africa, he returns to Germany and finds himself drawn into the resistance movement, which is focused on bringing down Hitler. With the help of fellow resistance members, they develop a plan called Operation Valkyrie, which is intended to serve as a coup d'état against Hitler and his government.
Von Stauffenberg becomes the leader of the resistance and works closely with General Friedrich Olbricht (played by Bill Nighy) and General Ludwig Beck (played by Terence Stamp) to further their plan. They enlist the help of other high-ranking officers within the army and the government to carry out the coup. Throughout the film, we see the complex web of plots and double-crosses that the conspirators engage in, as well as the tense and dangerous atmosphere that they must navigate to stay alive.
As the plan is set in motion, von Stauffenberg finds himself at the center of the action and must make a crucial decision about whether or not to personally kill Hitler. In the climactic scenes of the film, we see the events of the July 20 plot play out, culminating in a tense and violent confrontation that has far-reaching consequences for all involved.
In addition to Cruise, Nighy, and Stamp, the film features a strong supporting cast that includes Kenneth Branagh, Tom Wilkinson, and Eddie Izzard. The film received mixed reviews from critics but was generally praised for its tense and absorbing portrayal of a little-known chapter in World War II history.
