Uncharted Journey: Discovering Identity in Northern Nigeria

Drama  Nigeria

Up North is a Nigerian movie released in 2018, directed by Tope Oshin. The film tells the story of a young man named Bassey, a rebellious heir to a wealthy family who is sent away to National Service in Northern Nigeria. Bassey is accustomed to a life of privilege and luxury, and he struggles to adjust to life in a remote village in the north.

At first, Bassey's arrogance and entitled behavior cause him to clash with the people in the village. He resents being sent away from his comfortable life in Lagos and being forced to live in primitive conditions in the village. However, as he spends more time in the village, he begins to learn more about the culture and way of life of the people there.

Bassey forms a bond with his fellow National Service members and his host family in the village. He learns about the importance of community, hard work, and perseverance. He also begins to confront some of the personal demons that have been holding him back in life.

Up North explores themes of identity, privilege, and personal growth. The film features a talented cast of Nigerian actors, including Banky W, Adesua Etomi, and Rahama Sadau. The movie has received critical acclaim for its beautiful cinematography and thoughtful portrayal of a young man's journey of self-discovery.
