Ryan Bingham, played by George Clooney, is a corporate downsizing expert tasked with flying to various companies to lay off their employees. He relishes his life on the road, preferring the solitude and freedom it provides. He is also fixated on his goal of achieving ten million frequent flyer miles and earning a coveted spot in American Airlines' elite frequent flyer program.
However, Ryan's life is disrupted when his boss (Jason Bateman) hires a young, ambitious new colleague named Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) to streamline the downsizing process. Natalie introduces a new system that will make layoffs more efficient through video conferencing, threatening Ryan's job and his way of life.
Against his wishes, Ryan is forced to bring Natalie on the road with him to show her the ropes. Along the way, Ryan also meets Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga), another frequent flyer who shares his disdain for long-term relationships and emotional attachments. The two begin a casual, but complicated, affair.
As Ryan and Natalie crisscross the country, laying off employees and unraveling the personal turmoil that follows, Ryan begins to question the emptiness of his own life. He realizes that the relationships he has been avoiding may be the key to true fulfillment.
In the end, Ryan is forced to make a decision about his future and reconcile his desire for independence with his newfound sense of connection. The movie concludes with Ryan finally reaching his ten million mile mark but finding that the achievement is not as meaningful as he had hoped.
