Joy meets a reclusive musician named Jim (John Hawkes), who offers to help her write and record a song. They begin to spend more time together, eventually forming a deep emotional bond. Through their musical collaboration, Joy learns to trust and open up to others, including her sponsor (Melissa Leo) and childhood friend (Jake McDorman).

As Joy continues to work on her sobriety, she must also confront the intense feelings she has developed for Jim, who shows signs of struggling with his own emotional issues. Their relationship is further complicated by Jim's reluctance to perform or share his music with others.
