Unforgiven is a 2013 Japanese movie directed by Lee Sang-il as a remake of the American classic of the same name. Set in 1880s Hokkaido, Japan, the movie centers on the life of Jubei Kamata (Ken Watanabe), a former samurai now living as a farmer with his young son. Jubei was once a notorious killer, feared by many in Kyoto as one of the most deadly samurai in the land.

One day, Jubei hears a rumor about a bounty on a large sum of money offered by a brothel owner whose girls have been cut. He decides to accept the job to support his family. His old friend and former samurai comrade, Kingo Baba (Akira Emoto), persuades Jubei to join him and the young samurai, Yasaburo Yanagida (Shiori Kutsuna), who is passionate about earning some money by getting rid of the brothel owner's men.

However, things soon turn out to be more complicated than they seem. Jubei discovers that his targets aren't the evil men he believed them to be, but merely ordinary people trying to make a living like him. Moreover, other bounty hunters are after the same prize, including a young recruit, Goro Sawada (Yuya Yagira), who has an obsession with Jubei and wants to prove himself by killing him.

As Jubei struggles to come to terms with his past, he and Kingo try to save the villagers and the brothel girls who have become caught up in a deadly conflict. The movie deals with themes of loss, redemption, and the cyclical nature of violence in a society that is in transition from feudalism to modernity.

Unforgiven received generally positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success in Japan. It won several awards at the 36th Japan Academy Prize, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ken Watanabe.
