Connie, a suburban wife and mother, seems to have the perfect life with her husband Edward and their son. However, their marriage has lost its passion, and Connie finds herself longing for excitement and passion.
One day, while running an errand in Manhattan, she literally bumps into Paul, a handsome and charming book collector. They strike up a conversation, and Paul offers to show her around his favorite bookstores.
Despite feeling guilty, Connie can't resist the attraction she feels towards Paul and soon begins an affair with him. They begin to meet secretly in hotels and spend hours making love.
As their affair continues, Connie becomes more and more reckless, neglecting her responsibilities at home and even lying to her husband to cover up her infidelity. However, Edward eventually catches on and hires a private investigator to follow Connie.
When Edward confronts Connie, she tries to deny the affair, but he later confronts Paul at his office. A fight breaks out, and in the chaos, Edward accidentally kills Paul. Shaken by the violence, Connie decides to come clean and confesses everything to the police.
The film ends with Connie driving away from her old life, leaving behind the guilt and destruction she's caused.
