Frances (played by Diane Lane) is a successful book editor but her personal life is in shambles as she goes through a bitter divorce. Her best friends, Patty and Grace urge her to take a tour of Tuscany to lift her spirits. During the tour, Frances impulsively buys Bramasole, a dilapidated villa that is in need of major repairs.
As Frances tries to fix up the villa, she befriends the locals and immerses herself in the Italian culture. She also meets a variety of interesting characters such as the attractive Marcello, who operates a local bar and restaurant, and Katherine, a British expatriate who lives nearby. Frances continues to struggle with the challenges that come with renovating the villa but eventually finds peace and happiness in her new surroundings.
The movie also explores Frances' attempts to move on from her divorce and start a new romantic relationship. She navigates the complexities of dating in a foreign country while trying to rebuild her life and her home.
