Temptation on the Path to Redemption

Drama  France

Under the Sun of Satan is a 1987 French drama film directed by Maurice Pialat and based on the novel of the same name by Georges Bernanos. The film tells the story of Father Dossignan (played by Gérard Depardieu), a rural priest who becomes obsessed with saving the soul of a young girl named Catherine (played by Sandrine Bonnaire), who has murdered one of her lovers.

As Father Dossignan struggles to understand Catherine's motives and persuade her to confess and repent, he finds himself increasingly tormented by doubt and temptation. Satan appears to him in various guises, tempting him with worldly pleasures and challenging his faith in God.

The film is a deeply philosophical and introspective exploration of sin, redemption, and the nature of God's grace. It offers a stark and unflinching portrayal of the struggles that face those who seek to live a life of faith and devotion in a fallen world. Despite its challenging subject matter, the film was well-received by critics, and was awarded the Palme d'Or at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.
