Un Chien Andalou is a silent film released in 1929, with a running time of just over 16 minutes. The film is divided into eight sequences, which are loosely connected and do not follow a traditional narrative structure.
The opening sequence shows a man sharpening a razor blade, followed by him slicing a woman's eye open. The next few sequences show surreal and dream-like visuals, such as a man dragging two pianos containing dead donkeys and a woman's armpit hair turning into a sea urchin.
As the film progresses, the audiences are offered increasing violence and discomforting images, such as a man being crushed by a piano and ants crawling out of a hole in a man's hand.
Despite its controversial and disturbing imagery, the film was celebrated by the surrealism movement and revered as a work of art. It rejects logical explanations and meaning, instead opting for an exploration of the subconscious and irrationality.
