The woman from grandpa's past is named "Tico" and grandpa wants to give her the quarter as a repayment for a favor she did for him many years ago. Gennaro sets out to find Tico and ends up discovering a colorful array of characters and experiences in his Italian-American neighborhood.
Along the way, Gennaro befriends a street kid named "Skinny" and gets into some trouble with a local gangster. Despite this, Gennaro remains determined to fulfill his grandpa's wishes and discovers some valuable life lessons about loyalty, friendship, and family.
As Gennaro tries to track down Tico, he meets a variety of eccentric characters, including an elderly neighbor who believes her pet bird has a “gift” for predicting deaths, a shoemaker who makes shoes with goldfish in them, and a tailor who holds grudges against his own family. However, Gennaro ultimately finds Tico, and grandpa is able to finally receive some closure on his past.
The film stars Al Pacino as grandpa and newcomer Jerry Barone as Gennaro, with support from household names such as Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Joe Grifasi. Directed by James Foley and written by Joseph Stefano, Two Bits is a poignant coming-of-age story that explores the complexities of family and community relationships.
