Scott Turner is a meticulous and by-the-book police detective who is excited to leave his small town and move on to bigger and better things in the city. However, his plans are put on hold when he is called to investigate the murder of local resident Amos Reed. While searching for clues, Scott discovers that Reed's dog, a large and slobbery French Mastiff named Hooch, may have witnessed the crime.
Reluctantly taking care of Hooch while he investigates the murder, Scott is forced to change his clean, organized life to accommodate the energetic and messy dog. However, as he spends more time with Hooch, Scott begins to develop a bond with the dog and realizes that he may be the key to solving the case.
As the investigation continues, Scott uncovers a network of corruption and danger within the small town and realizes that the case may be much bigger than he first thought. With Hooch by his side, Scott must navigate the dangerous waters of the criminal underworld and protect both himself and the loyal dog from those who seek to do them harm.
In the end, Scott and Hooch successfully solve the case and bring the perpetrators to justice. While Scott still plans to leave for the city, he realizes that he will always remember the lessons he learned from Hooch and the importance of building relationships, even with the unlikeliest of partners.
