Trudy Walker (played by Shia LaBeouf) is a teenage boy with a passion for making films. He has a twin sister named Truman (played by Clara Bryant) who has a developmental disability and struggles with social interactions. Trudy feels neglected by her parents who focus all their attention on Truman's needs and she dreams of escaping her mundane life.
One day, Trudy learns about a filmmaking competition with a grand prize of a scholarship to a prestigious film school. She sees this as her chance to finally pursue her dream of becoming a filmmaker and proving her worth to her parents. With the help of her best friend Eddie (played by Craig Francis), she sets out to make a documentary about Truman's life, hoping to use it as her entry to the contest.
As Trudy films Truman, she discovers that her sister has a talent for music and is able to communicate through her music in ways she can't through words. Trudy starts to appreciate Truman's unique perspective and begins to understand the challenges she faces daily. As they work on the documentary together, the sisters bond over their shared love for music and filmmaking.
Trudy's documentary is a huge success and she wins the scholarship to film school, but she realizes that her true prize is the newfound appreciation and admiration she has for her sister. The film ends with Trudy and Truman performing together at a party, showcasing their talents and the bond they have developed through their shared passion for music and filmmaking.
