Gus Lobel (played by Clint Eastwood) is a veteran baseball scout for the Atlanta Braves who is facing pressure to retire due to his age and declining eyesight. Despite this, he insists on taking one last scouting trip to North Carolina to evaluate a top prospect for the upcoming draft.

His daughter, Mickey (played by Amy Adams), joins him on the trip in an attempt to reconnect with her father, who was often absent during her childhood due to his job. As they spend time together on the road, they bond over their shared love of baseball and their own personal struggles.

At the same time, Mickey attracts the attention of a young, up-and-coming scout named Johnny (played by Justin Timberlake) who offers to help her reconnect with her father. As the trio navigates their personal issues and the high-stakes world of professional baseball, they form a tight-knit bond that ultimately helps them overcome their challenges.

Throughout the movie, Gus also faces pressure from his boss to use new technology and analytics to evaluate players, while he insists on using his old-fashioned scouting techniques. This creates a conflict that ultimately comes to a head during the draft.

In the end, the movie explores themes of family, aging, and the importance of staying true to oneself, while also providing a hearty dose of baseball nostalgia.
