The man who took the rap for his friends is named Harry Talbot (played by Michael Madsen). After being released from prison, Harry wants to start a new life, but his old friends, Johnny (played by Billy Bob Thornton) and Frank (played by Seymour Cassel), pull him back into a life of crime.
One day, Johnny and Frank put a dead body in Harry's trunk without telling him. They need to retrieve a key from the body, but Harry has no idea what's in his trunk. As he drives away to start his new life, Johnny and Frank chase him down to get the key.
Meanwhile, a mob boss named Mazzilli (played by Sal Jenco) was killed by a hitman named Ray Higgs (played by Tom Towles). Mazzilli's daughter, Kit (played by Patricia Arquette), seeks revenge against Higgs. However, her grandmother, Sister Mary (played by Florence Stanley), wants to make peace between the families.
Kit and Harry cross paths when she tries to kill Higgs, who is also chasing them. They team up and try to outrun Higgs and Harry's old friends, while also avoiding the wrath of the mob and Sister Mary's thugs.
Throughout their adventure, Harry and Kit develop a romantic relationship. They ultimately steal a small plane and fly away to start a new life together, leaving the chaos behind.
