Kevin Flynn is a former employee of the software company ENCOM, which he claims stole his video game concepts. He attempts to retrieve evidence of his ownership by hacking into ENCOM's computer system. However, he is thwarted by the Master Control Program (MCP), an artificial intelligence program created by ENCOM's executives.
The MCP, determined to maintain control of all computer systems, traps Flynn inside the system and strips him of his physical form, leaving him as a digital entity. Flynn is joined in this virtual world by Tron, a security program designed to ferret out and destroy any sabotaging programs. Together, they work towards destroying the MCP and freeing the programs within The Grid.
Flynn and Tron are aided by other programs, including a female program named Yori, and Ram, a program that is killed by the MCP for helping them. The group faces many obstacles in their journey to defeat the MCP, including battles with the MCP's warrior programs and Light Cycles, futuristic motorcycles that leave walls of light in their path.
Ultimately, Flynn and Tron use a code that Flynn had created to end the MCP's hold on The Grid, and Flynn is able to retrieve the evidence he needed to prove his ownership of his video game concepts. He and Tron return to the physical world, with Flynn vowing to use his abilities to make a positive change in the world through his future work.
