The film opens with Kyle Miller's (Nicolas Cage) return from a business trip, where he brokers diamonds. He returns to his waterfront home to find that his daughter, Avery, is sneaking out to a party. While Kyle is trying to persuade his daughter to stay home, four robbers in security uniforms and ski masks stage a home invasion.
The robbers, led by Jonah (Cam Gigandet), want what's in the safe: cash and diamonds. Kyle tries to negotiate with the robbers while they hold Sarah (Nicole Kidman) hostage.
