TransMilitary is a documentary film that premiered at the 2018 South by Southwest film festival. The film features the stories of four transgender service members who are currently serving in the US military. The four individuals are Senior Airman Logan Ireland, Corporal Laila Villanueva, Captain Jennifer Peace, and First Lieutenant El Cook.
The film explores the challenges these individuals face as they serve in a military that does not fully accept them. Despite the legal ban on transgender people serving in the military, these four service members have continued to serve their country with pride and honor. However, their futures are uncertain as the US military seeks to discharge transgender service members.
TransMilitary also highlights the stories of family members of these service members who support them and fight for their right to serve. The film sheds light on the struggles of transgender service members and the need for policy changes to support their rights in the military.
The documentary was directed by Gabriel Silverman and Fiona Dawson and was produced by Jamie Coughlin, Craig Johnson, and Abby McEnany. It received critical acclaim for its honest portrayal of the issues faced by transgender service members and was awarded the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival.
