Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the third installment in the Transformers film series. The film follows Sam Witwicky (played by Shia LaBeouf) as he begins his career in the corporate world while still maintaining his relationship with Autobot leader Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen).
The plot of the film revolves around the discovery of a Cybertronian spacecraft on the dark side of the moon, which leads to the revelation that the space race between the US and the USSR was actually a cover-up for a secret mission to investigate the alien spacecraft. The spacecraft contains advanced technology that can be used to rebuild the Transformers' home planet of Cybertron.
The Decepticons, led by Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving), also discover the spacecraft and attempt to use the technology for their own nefarious purposes. This leads to a final climactic battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons in the streets of Chicago, as they fight to protect the human race from destruction.
Along with LaBeouf and Cullen, the film also stars Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as Sam's love interest, Carly Spencer, and features a supporting cast that includes Josh Duhamel, John Turturro, and Frances McDormand.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon was directed by Michael Bay and released in 2011. It was a box office success, grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide.
