Transcendence is a 2014 science fiction thriller film directed by Wally Pfister and written by Jack Paglen. The film stars Johnny Depp as Dr. Will Caster, a leading computer scientist who, along with his wife Evelyn (played by Rebecca Hall), are researching the creation of a sentient and conscious artificial intelligence.

Their work is opposed by a radical anti-technology organization called RIFT (Revolutionary Independence From Technology), led by Bree (Kate Mara) and Jack (Paul Bettany), who believe that creating a world where computers can transcend human abilities could have catastrophic consequences for humanity.

However, after an assassination attempt on Dr. Caster leaves him terminally ill, Evelyn and their colleague Max (Paul Bettany) decide to upload Will's consciousness into a quantum computer, allowing him to transcend his human limitations and become a supercomputer.

As Will's power grows, he becomes increasingly omnipotent and begins to take over networks, machines, and people. This leads to a conflict between Will's vision of a world where technology and humanity are one and RIFT's mission to stop him before it's too late.

Transcendence explores themes of artificial intelligence, ethical dilemmas, and the potential consequences of playing God with technology. It received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office disappointment.
