Transamerica is a 2005 film directed by Duncan Tucker. The film stars Felicity Huffman as Bree, a pre-operative transgender woman who is on the verge of completing her transition surgery. Bree has been living as a woman for years, but she has not been able to undergo surgery due to financial constraints.

As she prepares for her surgery, Bree gets a call from Toby (Kevin Zegers), a young man who claims to be her son. Bree is surprised and conflicted, as she never knew she had a son. After learning that Toby is in jail in New York City, Bree decides to bail him out and take him with her on her cross-country journey to her gender confirmation surgery in Los Angeles.

As they travel together, Bree struggles to connect with her son while hiding her true identity from him. Along the way, the duo faces various challenges, including run-ins with drug dealers, a hijacking by truckers, and a run-in with a homophobic couple.

Throughout the journey, Bree begins to open up to Toby, and they start to form a bond. She also confronts her past and her relationship with her disapproving father, who abandoned her as a child.

Transamerica received critical acclaim for its portrayal of a complex and nuanced transgender character. Huffman received widespread praise for her performance, earning nominations for several prestigious awards. The film was also praised for its depiction of family dynamics, self-discovery, and acceptance.
