The story begins with Andy, a young boy, playing with his toys: Woody, a cowboy doll, and various other toys. Andy's family is preparing to move to a new house, and Woody is worried about what will happen to him and the other toys. On Andy's birthday, his parents give him a brand new toy, Buzz Lightyear, a popular space ranger action figure. Buzz becomes Andy's new favorite toy, and Woody becomes jealous of Buzz's popularity.
One day, Woody and Buzz get into a fight, and they accidentally fall out of the window. The other toys believe Woody tried to murder Buzz, and they throw Woody out of the bedroom window. Woody ends up in the hands of Sid, Andy's next-door neighbor, who tortures toys for fun. Woody tries to escape but realizes that Buzz is also in Sid's room. They form a truce and attempt to find their way back to Andy's house before moving day.
On their journey back, they encounter various obstacles, including an encounter with "The Claw" at a pizza restaurant. Eventually, the two toys make it back to Andy's house, but Andy and his family have already left for their new home. Woody and Buzz are forced to follow Andy and his family in a delivery truck but accidentally get left behind at a gas station. They manage to catch up with the moving truck and make it back to Andy's new house.
At the end of the movie, Woody and Buzz's friendship has grown stronger, and the other toys have learned to accept Buzz as one of their own. The story ends with a happy reunion between Andy and his toys.
