The luxury condo manager, Josh Kovacs (played by Ben Stiller), is highly respected and trusted by the wealthy tenants of the Tower building in New York City. However, when Wall Street billionaire Arthur Shaw (played by Alan Alda) is arrested for fraud, Josh and his staff discover that their retirement savings were all invested in Shaw's fraudulent schemes.

Realizing they have nothing left to lose, Josh and his team, including Charlie (played by Casey Affleck), Enrique (played by Michael Peña), Odessa (played by Gabourey Sidibe), and Mr. Fitzhugh (played by Matthew Broderick), plan to rob Shaw's penthouse to steal back the money they lost.

They enlist the help of a small-time crook named Slide (played by Eddie Murphy) to assist in their heist. Along the way, they encounter many obstacles, including security measures in the Tower building and Shaw's own henchmen.

As they draw closer to the heist, tensions rise and some members of the team are forced to choose between their loyalty to Josh and their own personal gain. In the end, they successfully steal the money, but not without facing consequences for their actions.
