Total Recall is a science fiction action thriller film released in 1990, directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, and Michael Ironside. The movie is based on the 1966 Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale."
The film is set in the year 2084, where Douglas Quaid is a factory worker who dreams of a life on Mars. To fulfill this desire, he visits Rekall, a company that can implant false memories into a person's mind, making them feel like they experienced a vacation they never went on. However, the procedure goes awry, and Quaid begins to question his true identity and whether his memories are real or fake.
Quaid finds himself in the middle of a political plot, where the ruler of Mars, Vilos Cohaagen, is attempting to suppress a rebellion led by the mutant population. Quaid teams up with Melina, a woman who he believes is his lover from his implanted memories, and the two fight against Cohaagen's forces to save Mars and uncover Quaid's true identity.
The film was praised for its special effects, fast-paced action, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance as the lead character. It was also a commercial success, grossing over $261 million worldwide. Total Recall has since become a cult classic in the science fiction genre and has inspired a 2012 remake starring Colin Farrell.
