Total Eclipse is a 1995 biographical drama film directed by Agnieszka Holland. The film follows the tumultuous relationship between the French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine in the late 19th century. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Rimbaud and David Thewlis as Verlaine, the film depicts their radical artistic experimentation, drug use, and violent arguments in order to highlight the intensity of their connection.

As Rimbaud's work begins to gain recognition and Verlaine's star begins to fade, tension builds between the two poets. Rimbaud becomes increasingly demanding and manipulative, while Verlaine struggles to balance his own creative aspirations with his responsibilities to his wife and child. As their relationship turns increasingly toxic, their literary output becomes increasingly erratic, with Rimbaud's departure to Africa marking the end of their affair.

Despite mixed reviews upon its initial release, Total Eclipse has since garnered a cult following for its raw, visceral depiction of a passionate, destructive relationship. DiCaprio's performance in particular has been praised for its visceral intensity, with the film often cited as a key early role in his career. While its historical accuracy has been called into question, the film remains a gripping portrait of two artists on the brink of self-destruction.
