Topper is a 1937 American supernatural comedy film directed by Norman Z. McLeod and starring Cary Grant, Constance Bennett, and Roland Young. It is based on the 1926 novel Topper by Thorne Smith. The film follows the misadventures of George and Marion Kerby, a fun-loving couple who are killed in a car accident. They return as ghosts and decide to "haunt" their friend, Cosmo Topper, a mild-mannered bank executive. The Kerbys' mischievous antics soon lead Topper down a path of wild behavior, much to the consternation of his prim and proper wife. Along the way, Topper also encounters ghostly characters such as the mischievous chauffeur of the Kerbys, and a bevy of female spirits who take a liking to him. The film was a critical and commercial success, and was followed by two sequels and a television series. It is now considered a classic of the screwball comedy genre.
