Top Star

Drama  South Korea

Top Star is a 2013 South Korean film directed by Park Joong-hoon, who also makes his directorial debut in this movie. The film stars Uhm Tae-woong as Taeshik, a talent manager who dreams of becoming an actor. However, he spends most of his time managing his client Wonjoon (played by Kim Min-jun). One day, Taeshik is offered a role in a drama and decides to secretly audition for the part. He lands the lead role, surpassing the expectations of the director and the crew.

Taeshik's newfound fame and success quickly surpass that of his prior client Wonjoon, whom he used to manage. However, Taeshik is compelled to hold on to his stardom through any means necessary. He resorts to underhanded tactics to outdo his competition, including sabotage, betrayal, and deception.

Despite his success, Taeshik is haunted by guilt and regrets for his actions. He becomes alienated from his friends and colleagues, including his girlfriend Eunjung (played by Jo Yoon-hee). As his career continues to climb, he reaches the height of his success, but at the cost of his morality and integrity.

The film is a commentary on the dark side of the entertainment industry and the price of fame. It also explores themes of jealousy, ambition, and the morality of achieving success. The acting performances of the lead cast, especially that of Uhm Tae-woong, have received praise for their depiction of the emotional turmoil and conflict of the characters.
