Jerry Travers is an American dancer who arrives in London to star in a new show produced by his friend Horace Hardwick. After a successful opening night, Jerry meets Dale Tremont, a lovely young woman, when he starts tap dancing in his hotel room above hers. She complains about the noise, and he is immediately smitten with her.
The next day, Jerry pursues Dale in the park, and they have a romantic interlude. However, they are interrupted by the arrival of Horace, who is also interested in Dale. To avoid his advances, Dale flees to Italy, and Jerry follows her.
In Venice, Jerry tries to woo Dale, but she rebuffs him, believing he is still Horace. She also meets a charming Italian, Alberto Beddini, who mistakenly thinks Jerry is her husband. When Horace arrives, the misunderstandings reach a fever pitch, leading to a series of misadventures and comical misunderstandings.
In the end, Jerry clears up the confusion, and he and Dale declare their love for each other and perform a spectacular dance number in the show. Top Hat is a romantic comedy classic, featuring the incomparable dancing duo of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
