Top Gun: Maverick is set 34 years after the events of the original Top Gun, and sees Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) as a veteran pilot who now serves as a flight instructor at the Top Gun school. In a world where drone technology and fifth generation fighters have taken over, Maverick struggles to come to terms with the end of the era of dogfighting, which was his specialty.
As Maverick trains a new generation of pilots, he also has to deal with the ghosts of his past, including the death of his friend and wingman, Goose (Anthony Edwards), and his own status as a relic of a bygone era. Along the way, he meets Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late friend Goose, who has become a pilot himself.
The movie is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Tom Cruise on the sci-fi action movie Oblivion. It also stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Val Kilmer, and Ed Harris. The film was originally set to be released in June 2020, but has since been pushed back multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is now set to be released on November 19, 2021.
