Tom Jones is a 1963 British comedy film directed by Tony Richardson and adapted by playwright John Osborne from the classic novel of the same name by Henry Fielding. The film is set in 18th century England and tells the story of Tom Jones (Albert Finney), a young man of low birth who falls in love with Sophie Western (Susannah York), the daughter of a wealthy landowner.
Sophie reciprocates Tom's feelings, but their prospects seem bleak due to their differing social classes and the other obstacles that stand in their way. Sophie is betrothed to the dull and unappealing Blifil (David Warner), while Tom is pursued by a number of women, including the lusty Lady Bellaston (Joan Greenwood) and the fiery Molly Seagrim (Diane Cilento).
