Toast is a British film adaptation of Nigel Slater's memoir by the same name. It portrays his childhood in Wolverhampton, England during the 1960s. The story revolves around Nigel Slater, a lonely young boy who finds solace in food.
Nigel's mother (Victoria Hamilton) is a terrible cook, often serving meals that are overcooked, under-seasoned, or burnt. As a result, Nigel grows up eating a lot of canned and pre-packaged foods, which he quickly grows tired of.
His life changes when his father brings home a new housekeeper, Mrs. Potter (Helena Bonham Carter). Mrs. Potter is a wonderful cook, introducing Nigel to new flavors and techniques. She encourages his love for food, and he eventually starts cooking for himself.
