Through a Glass Darkly

Drama  Sweden

Through a Glass Darkly is a Swedish drama film directed by Ingmar Bergman, released in 1961. The story follows the troubled Karin, who returns to her family's cottage on a remote Swedish island with her husband, father, and brother. Karin has recently been released from a mental hospital where she was treated for schizophrenia, and her family hopes that the peace and quiet of the island will help her recover. However, as the summer progresses, Karin's visions become more intense, and she becomes increasingly withdrawn and erratic. Her husband Martin tries to connect with her physically, but she cannot bear intimacy. Her father David is emotionally distant, and instead focuses on his work as a writer. His obsession with his work seems to be a contributing factor to Karin's mental state. Her younger brother Minus, who is struggling with his own sexuality, finds himself drawn to his sister as he tries to understand her illness. Through a Glass Darkly is a powerful exploration of mental illness and family dynamics, and was widely acclaimed for its honest and compassionate treatment of these themes. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1962, and is considered one of Bergman's masterpieces.
