Jerry Mitchell is portrayed as a typical high school nerd, complete with thick glasses and a love for Star Trek. However, when he is assigned to write a piece about new student Buddy Revell for the school paper, things take a turn for the worse.
Buddy is rumored to be a psychopathic nutcase, and Jerry soon finds out why. When he accidentally brushes up against Buddy in the bathroom, Buddy issues a challenge to fight him in the parking lot at 3pm.
Jerry is terrified - he has never been in a fight before and doesn't want to get hurt. He tries everything he can think of to avoid the confrontation, but nothing seems to work. His friends and schoolmates all think he's a coward, and his reputation is on the line.
As the hours tick by, Jerry becomes more and more desperate. He even tries to pay off a school thug to take his place in the fight, but it all comes to a head in the parking lot at 3pm.
The fight between Jerry and Buddy is intense and exhilarating, with both boys taking heavy blows. In the end, it's Jerry who comes out on top, proving to himself and his schoolmates that he is capable of standing up for himself.
