In Thor: The Dark World, Thor returns to Asgard after defeating the Chitauri army in Avengers. However, he is troubled by the recurring visions of the Convergence, a cosmic event that occurs every 5,000 years, during which the Nine Realms align. Meanwhile, Jane Foster discovers a portal to another dimension and absorbs a powerful energy known as the Aether, inadvertently becoming the host of Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves.
Malekith seeks to use the power of the Aether to plunge the universe into eternal darkness, destroying Asgard and all the other realms in the process. Thor realizes that Jane is in danger and brings her to Asgard for protection. However, Malekith and his army attack Asgard, resulting in a fierce battle. In the midst of this chaos, Thor seeks the help of his imprisoned brother, Loki, to defeat Malekith.
The brothers team up to lead an assault on Malekith's stronghold, but Loki's true intentions are revealed, and he sacrifices himself to save Thor. With the Aether destroyed and Malekith defeated, Thor reunites with Jane but must make the difficult decision to remain in Asgard and become its new ruler. The movie ends with Thor bidding farewell to Jane as he prepares to face new threats and challenges as the protector of the Nine Realms.
