Modesty Divine hires the eccentric gardener Thomas to help her revamp her sprawling estate. Thomas is an oddball character who is obsessed with peeping at his clients' personal lives. As Modesty starts to confide in Thomas about her unhappy marriage to Ash, their relationship takes an unexpected turn.
One day, Ash comes to the estate to finalize their divorce settlement, but the meeting quickly turns ugly. Thomas witnesses the fight and the next morning Ash is found dead in a suspicious accident involving a riding lawnmower.
