This Transient Life is a Japanese drama film directed by Akio Jissoji. The movie tells the story of a young man named Shun-ichi (played by Ryo Tamura) who lives near a remote Buddhist monastery with his sister Sanae (played by Michio Akiyama). Shun-ichi falls in love with his sister and they begin a secret love affair. However, their relationship results in Sanae becoming pregnant.
When a monk discovers their secret, Shun-ichi is expelled from the monastery and sent to work as an assistant to a master sculptor named Shinjo (played by Ryohei Uchida). Shinjo takes a liking to Shun-ichi and teaches him the art of sculpture. Shun-ichi becomes a skilled sculptor and begins to improve his life.
However, Shun-ichi's relationships with women become increasingly complicated. He falls in love with Shinjo's wife, Takako (played by Kimiko Nakayama), and also has an affair with a local geisha. When Shinjo finds out about Shun-ichi's affairs, he becomes furious and ends their apprenticeship.
Shun-ichi's life continues to spiral out of control as he becomes consumed by his lustful desires. He even resorts to stealing precious artwork from Shinjo's studio in order to fund his addiction to women.
